That being said I do believe you can play the 2nd instalment, when it comes out, without playing the first and not feel left in the dust by the story. An automaton on a workshop is better than 4 human-manned ones. You can build 2 coal mines and they beat an automaton on one, but 2 workshops is only 1.3x better than 1.
Though game play / visuals are expected to be further developed in the 2nd instalment you will still miss out on the massive amount of pure gold in the form of story driven content. On Workshops, that statement fails to touch the fact that workshops have very brutal diminishing returns.
